Legendary producer David O' Selznick was not known for making comedies, but once the future producer of "Gone With The Wind" committed himself to Ben Hecht's screwball laugh-fest "Nothing Sacred", Selznick threw himself into the project body and soul, and the result is one of the most memorable pictures from Hollywood's Golden Age. Hard-nosed director William "Wild Bill" Wellman milked every laugh from the goofy tale of a cynical New York reporter taken in by the contrived story of Hazel Flagg, the beautiful babe from the sticks who is supposedly dying from a fatal dose of radiation poisoning. The opportunistic scribe promotes an all-expense paid trip to the Big Apple for Hazel (and her boozy doctor), giving his newspaper the exclusive rights to cover the poor girl's impending demise. But, when the beautiful Hazel lingers too long, the reporter stumbles upon the whole scam. Realizing he has fallen madly in love with her, he helps concoct a fittingly screwy way out of their admittedly delicate situation. So popular it was remade in 1954 by Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis as "Living It Up", "Nothing Sacred" remains as one of the top films of 1937 and as a brilliant showcase of the great comedic talents of the beloved Carole Lombard.
